GEO · Generative Engine Optimization

Get your brand cited by AI, not just ranked by Google.

Your buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI which vendors to trust — before they ever reach your site. GEO makes sure the answer includes you, and we measure it with the OddScrew Citation Score.

The new search era

What is Generative Engine Optimization?

GEO makes your brand easier for AI to cite, recommend, and mention. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google AI about your category, the engine returns one synthesized answer — and your brand is either named in it or invisible.

Traditional SEO relies on crawlability, indexability, and rankability. GEO adds a fourth pillar: retrievability — how easily AI systems can find, trust, and prioritise your brand when generating a response.

LLMs don’t just rank pages. They synthesise information from across the web — knowledge graphs, publisher sites, review platforms, directories, and forums. Whether you appear depends on how clearly your expertise is established, how consistently your brand is represented across trusted sources, and how well your content is structured for machines to interpret.

Your audience is already on these platforms

  • ChatGPT
  • Perplexity
  • Claude
  • Google AI Overviews
  • Google AI Mode
  • Gemini
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • Meta AI

These are not one audience. Each AI platform utilizes distinct training data, real-time retrieval mechanisms, and proprietary evaluation models. Because they parse the web differently, being cited as the top recommendation on one engine does not guarantee visibility on the next.

What changed in search

The ground moved. Most brands haven’t.

Six shifts that changed how B2B buyers discover vendors — and what it now takes to be the brand AI names.

  1. 01

AI Overviews dominate the search page

Google has heavily integrated AI-generated answers at the top of search results. This commands the most valuable real estate, pushing the traditional ten blue links far below the fold.

    Google Search updates

  2. 02

You’re cited in the answer, or you’re invisible

With AI Overviews taking up the top of the screen, zero-click rates have surged. The overwhelming majority of these searches end without a scroll to any traditional link. Citation inside the answer is the most critical visibility left.

    Industry search trends

  3. 03

    Rankings stopped predicting citations

A shrinking percentage of AI citations come from top-ranking organic pages. A traditional page-one ranking no longer buys you a guaranteed seat in the AI answer.

    AI citation analyses

  4. 04

AI surfaces discover what search misses

A meaningful share of pages cited by ChatGPT have little or no traditional organic visibility. AI engines find and surface content that conventional rankings never would — which cuts both ways.

    AI search traffic analyses

  5. 05

    Ads arrived inside AI answers

Sponsored placements now appear in ChatGPT, and Google has begun placing ads inside AI Overviews. Paid sits beside the organic answer — it doesn’t replace the recommendation buyers actually trust.

    OpenAI & Google ad features

  6. 06

    Agents are becoming the reader

Autonomous agents increasingly browse, compare and shortlist on a buyer’s behalf. They judge your site on machine-readability — semantic HTML, API-accessible data, and definitive entity relationships — not design.

    Agentic browsing evolution

How we measure it

The OddScrew Citation Score

You shouldn’t have to guess whether GEO is working. The OddScrew Citation Score (OCS) is our proprietary methodology that evaluates your AI visibility out of 100 across five weighted dimensions — prioritising the signals that most influence whether AI recommends you.

  • 15 pts

    Presence & Crawlability

Can AI engines and autonomous agents access your site, and how often do you appear across core industry prompts?

  • 15 pts

    Content Citation Readiness

Is your architecture — schema, semantic chunks, headers — built for clean, direct machine ingestion?

  • 20 pts

    Contextual Accuracy

When cited, does AI cross-reference your brand data accurately across the web without hallucinating?

  • 25 pts

    Trust & Attribution

Are you earning validation and mentions in the highly trusted third-party publications that LLMs prioritise?

  • 25 pts

    Recommendation Strength

When buyers ask AI to compare options, are you cited as a generic alternative, or the definitive “best choice”?

* Because AI retrieval models shift constantly, the OddScrew scoring algorithm adapts dynamically as new ranking variables and engine updates emerge.

The diagnostic

What the AI Visibility Audit covers

Every engagement starts with the AI Visibility Audit — five components that reveal exactly where you stand and why, each one feeding a dimension of your OddScrew Citation Score. This is the framework behind our published GEO audits.

Engine scope: we don’t spread thin across every assistant. Prompt testing runs against the three to four engines your category actually gets asked on — selected at kickoff from your buyers’ real behaviour, then named in your scope and held constant so every re-score compares like with like.

  1. 01

    AI Crawl Access

    Scores → Presence & Crawlability · 15 pts

Before anything else works, AI engines need to find and read your content. Many brands unknowingly block AI crawlers through robots.txt or CDN settings, or hide content behind JavaScript most AI crawlers can’t execute.

We check: robots.txt for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended · JavaScript rendering · server-log user agents.

  2. 02

    Entity Clarity & Contextual Accuracy

    Scores → Contextual Accuracy · 20 pts

AI builds its understanding of your brand by cross-referencing sources. Conflicting descriptions across your site, LinkedIn, directories, and press cause inaccurate answers — or get you deprioritised as a source.

We check: how each engine in your scope describes you · consistency across profiles · schema and sameAs alignment.

  3. 03

    Extraction Readiness

Scores → Content Citation Readiness · 15 pts

Extraction readiness measures whether your content can be extracted, summarised, and cited accurately. AI favours clear headings, direct answers up front, FAQ formatting, schema, and verifiable data.

We check: direct answers placed immediately in the intro text · FAQ & Article schema · short, scannable paragraphs optimized for extraction · verifiable claims.

  4. 04

    Trust & Authority Signals

    Scores → Trust & Attribution · 25 pts

AI applies E-E-A-T when deciding what to cite, and leans harder on earned media than Google does — often suppressing brand-owned content in favour of third-party editorial. Your own site alone isn’t enough.

We check: third-party mentions · named, credentialled authors · presence on Reddit, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

  5. 05

    Per-Engine Citation Gap

    Scores → Recommendation Strength · 25 pts

The Citation Gap is the difference between where you appear in AI answers and where your competitors do — measured engine by engine, because the sources cited by Google AI and ChatGPT overlap far less than brands assume. It’s the single most commercially valuable output.

We check: your priority queries run against each engine in your scope, separately · which brands appear where · every gap a competitor wins and you don’t.

90-day sprints. Compounding visibility.

The blueprint we use to move brands from a GEO audit to active citations — highest-impact fixes first, compounding authority over time. Ninety days is the working cadence, not the finish line: each sprint ships a defined scope and a re-score, and the citation gains stack across sprints.

  1. Days 1–30

    Fix the foundation

    • Resolve AI crawl access — robots.txt, CDN, JS rendering
    • Standardise entity signals across every profile
    • Implement Article, FAQ, and Organisation schema
    • Rewrite key pages to lead with citable answers
  2. Days 31–60

    Build citation assets

    • Answer assets for your top citation-gap queries
    • FAQ sections in the language buyers actually use
    • Outreach to the publications AI cites in your vertical
    • Comparison content against named alternatives
  3. Days 61–90

    Measure & defend

    • Re-run your full query set, engine by engine, against baseline
    • Track share-of-voice movement across each platform
    • Catch new citation gaps as competitors respond
    • Set the ongoing monitoring cadence — weekly at the top tiers — and ownership

GEO, answered

Still have questions? We’re happy to talk.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of making your brand easier for AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI to cite, recommend, and mention when people ask questions. Where SEO optimizes for ranking on a results page, GEO optimizes for being named in the answer itself.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO improves visibility in traditional search results through keywords, backlinks, and technical health. GEO improves visibility in AI-generated answers through entity clarity, authority, and content structured for machine extraction. They aren’t competing strategies — strong SEO builds the foundation GEO depends on, and we run both together.

If I already rank well on Google, am I covered?

No, and that gap is widening. A shrinking percentage of AI citations come from top-ranking organic pages, meaning a page-one ranking no longer guarantees you a seat in the answer. There is also limited overlap between the sources cited in AI Overviews and those listed in traditional organic results. Ranking and being cited are now two different outcomes requiring two different kinds of work.

How do Google’s AI Overviews change the search experience?

AI Overviews command the most valuable real estate at the top of the search page, pushing traditional links below the fold. Because this conversational answer satisfies many queries instantly, the zero-click rate is dramatically higher. If you aren’t cited in that top AI answer, you are virtually invisible to users who don’t scroll down.

How do you measure GEO results?

We assess your AI visibility with the OddScrew Citation Score — a proprietary evaluation out of 100 across five weighted dimensions — then track how often your brand is cited across AI engines for your priority queries, how you compare to competitors, and how that visibility ties back to pipeline in your CRM.

Which AI platforms does GEO cover?

The surfaces that matter are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI — which spans AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini — plus Copilot and Meta AI. We don’t track all of them for every client. Most categories genuinely live on three or four, so we select those at kickoff and monitor them properly rather than everything thinly. Your scope names your engines on day one, and they stay fixed so each re-score is comparable.

Now that AI platforms show ads, is organic AI visibility still worth it?

More than before. Paid placements now appear inside AI answers, but they sit alongside the organic recommendation rather than replacing it, and they are clearly labelled as sponsored. Brands already recognised organically convert paid placements far better, and organic citations keep working when the ad budget pauses. Earned visibility is the foundation; paid amplifies it.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Technical and entity fixes land first — most retrievability wins show inside the first 60 days. Citation movement typically becomes measurable around month three to four, once fixes have been recrawled and earned mentions start accumulating. Meaningful pipeline impact happens around month six to twelve. GEO rewards early movers — the advantage gets harder to displace the longer it runs.

Why are third-party mentions so important for GEO?

AI engines don’t rely on your website alone — they learn from the broader web, including publications, forums, and review platforms. The large majority of AI citations trace back to third-party sources, so earning mentions in the places AI trusts is central to getting cited.

Can GEO improve my traditional SEO too?

Yes. Many signals GEO strengthens — structured data, entity authority, content clarity, and quality mentions — also help search engines understand and rank your content. Technical work done for AI crawlability supports Google crawlability too.
